Though it’s located in the suburbs of Washington’s biggest city, this community suffers from a major metropolitan problem – addiction.
In fact, the SeaTac and Tukwila areas had even higher rates of drug and alcohol-caused deaths (30.3 per 100,000) compared to many other areas in King County like Seattle (27.5), Kent (19.9), Federal Way (17.4), Auburn (17.3), and Burien/Des Moines (16.0).
But unfortunately, many residents still don’t know where to turn to for help in overcoming their substance abuse problem. And that can lead to so many more people struggling with addiction than there need to be.
To help tackle this problem, this comprehensive guide to addiction resources in and around SeaTac looks at some of the best places to find help regarding substance abuse. It details overdose help tips, local support groups, professional treatment options, and more.
Struggling with an addiction doesn’t have to be an isolating experience. And this guide can help.
Overdoses are on the rise in the United States. And they’re deadlier than ever.
Consider this: deaths from drug overdoses have spiked by an astounding 316% over the last two decades. And in 2017, they reached an all-time high of well over 70 thousand.
While the opioid epidemic is mostly to blame, overdose deaths involving other drugs are increasing too. Cocaine, benzodiazepines, psychostimulants, and more are all killing more people in the U.S. than they ever have before.
It’s critical then, to know some of the most common signs of an overdose as well as what to do to help treat one.
Being able to pick out the signs of an overdose is one of the first steps towards effectively treating it.
Below are some signs to watch out for.
Crystal Meth – This potent stimulant can lead to days-long binges and serious health disorders. And when it’s abused in especially high quantities, it can very easily lead to an overdose. Some signs of a meth overdose include:
Heroin – Perhaps the most notorious illicit drug today, heroin is powerful, addictive, and deadly. Some signs of a heroin overdose usually include:
AIRWAYS AND LUNGS
EYES, EARS, NOSE, AND THROAT
HEART AND BLOOD
SKIN
STOMACH AND INTESTINES
NERVOUS SYSTEM
Cocaine – One of the most recognizable illicit drugs today, cocaine is as deadly as it is popular. The signs of an overdose could include:
Benzodiazepines – Most well known by drugs like Xanax and Ativan, benzos are usually used to treat a variety of mood disorders. But when they’re abused, they can be more dangerous than many people may know. An overdose on benzos may include symptoms like:
Alcohol – Inextricably embedded in much of American culture, alcohol is widely available and legal. But it’s also quite dangerous when abused. Here are some of the signs of alcohol poisoning to watch out for:
Prescription Opioids – Also known as prescription painkillers, opioids like OxyContin and Demerol are legal, but only with a prescription from a physician. And even still, these drugs are highly abused by many. To make matters worse, abusing them can very easily lead to an overdose. Below are some of the most notable signs of an overdose.
Treating an overdose is a serious matter. And doing so calls for medical expertise. That’s why it’s absolutely essential that you call 9-1-1 immediately after recognizing the signs of an overdose.
If you are alone and have to leave the victim’s side, be sure to place them into what’s known as the “recovery position.” This doesn’t take more than a few seconds to do, and it can be the most important step in preventing a range of life-threatening complications.
The operators at emergency services will be able to send an ambulance to your location while also giving you instructions on how to help treat the victim. However, these instructions and the details they provide EMTs depends on the information you provide them.
As such, do not lie or leave out any details here. For instance, not telling operators that the overdose involved an illicit drug can change the way that the EMTs administer treatment. And consequently, that can mean a worse outcome for the victim.
Some questions they may ask could include:
The operator may also tell you to perform CPR or administer other treatments like inducing vomiting. Try to follow their instructions as completely as possible.
Once emergency service workers arrive, they’ll take over treating the victim. They may use specialized medical tools as well as medications like naloxone. They’ll also probably transport the victim to a hospital for more comprehensive care.
Overcoming a substance use disorder is no easy task. And unfortunately, willpower alone is often not enough to push through overpowering cravings and unexpected triggers.
Recovering addicts need support to keep them motivated, vigilant, and in the right frame of mind to stay sober longer. And that’s where local support groups come in.
Local support groups are one of the best places to look for a dedicated and helpful social support network that won’t let you down. And best of all, many of these support groups are free to attend, widely available, and open to all.
Below are some of the best support groups in the SeaTac area.
First founded in 1935 in Akron, Ohio, Alcoholics Anonymous is perhaps one of the most popular support groups in the entire world. In fact, recent estimates put membership numbers at well over 2.1 million.
These meetings typically use the group talk approach, where members share their stories and learn from the stories of others. But on a more granular level, AA also follows what’s known as the 12-step model. This model is actually so effective that it’s even backed up by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).
Meetings are also incredibly accessible. Anyone looking to get control of their drinking is welcome to join, and anonymity is a core principle these groups are built on.
Luckily, there are also quite a few AA meetings happening in and around SeaTac, WA to choose from.

One of the very first offshoots of AA, Narcotics Anonymous was founded in 1953. And since then, it’s expanded internationally and now hosts nearly 67 thousand meetings in 149 different countries.
While it follows a similar 12-step model, the key difference with NA is that it's open to substance abusers of any kind. That means people with a problem involving heroin, crack, meth, or alcohol even are free to attend.
There are quite a few nearby meetings to have a look at too.

Friends and family members of drinkers often have quite a few problems of their own because of their loved one’s addiction. And unfortunately, many of these people don’t get the help they need to stay safe, healthy, and happy.
Al-Anon is devoted specifically to filling this need. It’s a 12-step group like AA and NA. And also like these groups, membership is free, open, and accessible.
There are quite a few Al-Anon meetings taking place around SeaTac. So have a look below for more info.

It can be hard for young people to open up to a room full of strangers, especially if those strangers are more than twice their age. On top of that, many are going through entirely different problems that older people may not be able to relate to.
Alateen is an Al-Anon offshoot devoted specifically to helping young people hurt by another person’s drinking. These groups are typically populated by a certain age range that depends on the specific group.
And this can make opening up and sharing significantly easier.
There are a few Alateen meetings taking place around SeaTac to have a look at.

Like Al-Anon, Nar-Anon is devoted to helping friends and family members deal with the substance abuse of their friends or loved ones. And also like Al-Anon, meetings are free, open to all, and built on the 12-step model.
A few topics that might be covered in these groups could include:
There aren’t as many Nar-Anon groups nearby unfortunately. But even still, there are two in particular that aren’t that far away from SeaTac.

Alcoholism can be poisoning to social relationships. And many problem drinkers experience serious issues with giving their family the emotional support they need to lead healthy lives. As a result, children growing up in an alcoholic home can harbor trauma that can actually persist for a lifetime if left untreated.
Adult Children of Alcoholics or ACoA is focused on helping adults who are still dealing with their parent’s alcoholic past today. And it’s a vital source of invaluable support for so many.
There are quite a few ACoA meetings taking place nearby too.

12-step groups aren’t the only paths to recovery. And indeed, some addicts may not see as much value in 12-step programs as others.
Thankfully, there are 12-step alternatives like SMART Recovery to offer these individuals the support they need.
SMART Recovery is a group-based support system that uses evidence-based techniques and strategies to empower members to stay sober for the long-term. Meetings are also led by certified instructors rather than members themselves.
Below are the closest SMART Recovery groups to consider.

While face-to-face groups are often the best ways to get personalized and meaningful support, not everyone will be able to attend. It could be a lack of transportation, a jam-packed schedule, or any other number of reasons.
But no matter what the cause, there are more flexible alternatives out there. And online support groups are some of the best because they can be accessed practically anywhere. All you need is a smart device or computer and an internet connection.
Take a look below for some great places to start finding online support groups now.
>While support can be a vital component of any path towards recovery, the truth of the matter is that without a higher level of care, most addicts will end up relapsing. In fact, the estimated relapse rates for substance addiction are around 40 to 60% for most people.
A professional treatment program is perhaps one of the best ways to make recovery far more successful. These programs use evidence-based treatments and strategies to help patients overcome the biggest hurdles to getting clean and maintain sobriety in the long-run.
In addition to ensuring a higher rate of recovery, there are a few other benefits to partnering with a professional program to be aware of. Some of the most notable include:
The majority of professional programs fall into one of two categories: detoxification and rehabilitation.
Detoxification is will always come first. And it’s concerned with reducing the severity and duration of withdrawals – physical and mental side effects that happen when someone quits an addictive substance.
These withdrawals can be quite severe in some cases, leading many recovering addicts to relapse just to get some relief from them.
A professional program helps protect against relapse while also treating these symptoms and preventing any dangerous complications along the way.
Rehabilitation comes after detox, and it's more focused on treating the long-term mental impacts of addiction. These programs help reverse compulsive drug-seeking behaviors, instill healthy new life strategies, and enable patients to better cope with the stresses of life.
And without rehab, detox alone does little to nothing to change future substance abuse.
There are three different types of rehab programs too.
SeaTac Washington has one of the highest drug and alcohol overdose rates in the entire state. But thankfully, there are so many different addiction resources nearby that residents can take advantage of. It just takes knowing where to find them.
And when it does come time to seek out a professional treatment program, SeaTac is less than 20 miles from one of the best treatment centers in all of the Pacific Northwest: Northpoint the Imagine Bellevue.
The Northpoint Seattle is an empirically-based intensive outpatient program that offers patients flexibility, affordability, and an unprecedented level of care. Each of our programs is individually crafted to meet the specific needs of the patient. Our facility is also a perfect blend of modernity and comfort. And we have one of the best staff-to-patient ratios in the area.
Plus, we’re proud to be nationally accredited by the Joint Commission, a testament to our dedicated service quality.
However, we know that not everyone will be right for our programs. And talking with a qualified addiction professional will help you see if you’re a good fit.
